With a childcare degree, you can work anywhere in Australia. You can work in Melbourne, Sydney or Adelaide as long as you have the right qualification.

As a basic qualification, child care workers in Australia would need to complete Certificate III for Early Childhood Care and/or Children's Services.

If you wish to take on a higher position such as manager or coordinator, then you will need to earn a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care

Before you can study for the Diploma, you must have a Certificate III. You can take these courses via a VET supplier, TAFE, or an on-the-job traineeship.

Qualification options will include:

  • Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30121)
  • Certificate IV in School Age Education and Care (CHC40113)
  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50121)

During your course, you will study young children's emotional, physical, mental, and social health, how to organize and carry out activities for them, as well as the Code of Ethics for Child Care.

You will also need to comply with the following requirements in addition to your qualifications.

  • Police Checks
  • Working with Children Check
  • First aid certificate (updated every year)
  • You may also need to register with the Department of Human Services (depending on where you’re applying to work)

It is also highly encouraged to get more information about the rules and regulations on childcare by checking ACECQA (Australian Children's Education and Quality Care Authority), the organization that assists governments in the management of the National Quality Framework for Child Education and Care.
